CHARMAINE

As I start putting the food on the table, Imris watches our babies, still in awe of Dovrec’s moment of glory. I’m proud and excited for him as well but it’s something else entirely to see the joy on his face.

I didn’t really realize just how happy I would be that he was here for our son’s first steps. But...having my babies’ father there seemed to make everything that much more magical.

“What a good, smart boy you are,” Imris praises him as he gently throws him up in the air and catches him. Osella lifts her arm up to demand the same turn and he picks her up and blows a messy kiss onto her cheek, which sets her off giggling.

“Look at you, walking like a big boy!” I add, picking Dovrec up to set him in the wooden high-chair. “You are growing up so fast, little man!”

Dovrec grins and coos at me, reaching up to poke my face with a finger. He’s so squishy and chubby that it’s hard to resist squeezing him. I lean in and nibble on his cheeks, making him squeal and giggle.

“Our babies are going to be all grown up soon!” Imris jokes as he swings Osella up to put her in her own wooden high-chair. The chairs were a gift from Master Miothro.

“They’ll be adults and leave us,” I tease, looking down at Dovrec with a fake pout. “Don’t leave mommy!” I cry, pretending to sniffle. Dovrec looks at me, face screwing up as he prepares to wail, worried I’m upset.

“No!” I immediately go into damage mode. “No, I’m just joking baby! You’re alright, you’re good,” I tell him, tickling his belly. Osella smacks her chair with a flat palm, as though chiding me for upsetting her brother.

“Sorry,” I say, trying very hard not to laugh. “Mommy’s sorry babies.”

“We are just so excited that you can both walk now!” Imris adds, grinning and leaning in to blow another noisy kiss on Osella’s cheek. “You’ll be running soon too.” He reaches out and scoops up a little mashed burgona and feeds it to her.

She makes a noise of approval and reaches her chubby hands out, trying to hold the spoon herself. Imris feeds her another spoonful and I busy myself with taking a bite of my own dinner with one hand while feeding Dovrec some of his own mashed burgona with the other.

Motherhood has taught me oh-so-useful tricks like this.

Dovrec grabs a bit of mashed burgona that fell off his spoon and onto his table and picks it up with delicate fingers, marveling at the texture. He seems to instantly reject the sensation though, and tries to drop it only to discover it won’t go anywhere.

With a high whine, he looks at me and holds his hand out, wailing that the burgona won’t get off him. I giggle and use a cloth to wipe it off and he calms, his red face returning to its normal pewter shade.

“Look at how well you hold your spoon!”
